Picking up dead wood/logs for burning?

I've got a log fire in my new house but I don't really feel like paying for wood to burn when there's so much of it lying around the area. My mate says that it's heavily frowned upon to go into the woods owned by the forrestry comission and pick up dead wood. Is this true? Anyone else do it? I've made a few trips on foot to get enough wood to last one night, but we're thinking of going out in the car and filling it up as much as we can and storing it under the cover outside.

It makes no sense to me to go out and buy wood that has come from trees that were chopped down specifically for that purpose.

do you think wood grows on trees?

Didnt you considered something like "buying wood" when you decided to get a wood burner???? for fucks sake

highly illegal - perhaps if its in an area that has been clear felled ( looks like a atomic bomb has hit it ) that left over wood is no good and you could probly take it , but stacked wood is there for a reason..... and some parts of forestry land have camaras hiddin in trees , honest ..

I don't mean stacked wood, just dead wood that has fallen/began to rot and is just lying around. Seems weird to be highly illegal but so are a lot of things. I suppose having people cut down live trees so that people can buy it to burn makes more sense as far as giving a shit about the environment is concerned :fart:

Also, I never bought a wood burner. It's a FIRE PLACE. Those things that are built into a wall of a house and can't easily be removed

hope you have proper central heating as well.

wood thats just lying around is essential for the forests eco system and soil health, its also a haven for all types of wildlife.

Try stealing some if you like, unless u have a 4x4 and travel miles out of the way i assure you u will get reported or worse if its a farmers land.
