Endless Race, Hands Free and TUSK have combined to bring to Newcastle one of Chicago’s most innovative and exciting producers/DJs for a rare UK date.

Chicago has been well known over the years as the birthplace of House and for keeping up its high standards for over 20 years, giving us producers and DJs such as Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles and Marshall Jefferson, and the scene is far from dead.

Chicago’s Hieroglyphic Being is a new kind of house producer, pushing the boundaries of what’s acceptable in a c

lub setting by drawing on experimental and noise elements in his sets, which are nevertheless comprised of unadulterated dance music. Having been mentored by Adonis and having seen Ron Hardy play first hand, he has spent the last decade and a half producing a vast discography that can somehow satisfy the tech/house and drone plateau spheres of the brain simultaneously, vintage breaks and stabs pouring prolifically over all formats from lo-spec cdr onwards, and swelling like his reputation as a DJ and that of his ever-expansive Mathematics label.

The electronic renaissance that’s occupied leftfield turntables of the last few years inevitably brought him new audiences. His lo-fi inclinations bounce off splashing hi-hats, jabbing synths and kick drum propellants and can be motorik, funky and joyously clattering within the space of one track. Long immersed in the Chicago scene as a promoter and producer, his lack of commercial success via those channels is perhaps explained by his view of himself as “an experimental Noise artist first and foremost” and the fact that he’s equally as driven by his love of Sun Ra and sci-fi and he is by Larry Heard and Ron Hardy.
