they claim to be but are more interested in making some cash than getting a conviction

Nobody but them and the accused know for sure though :D

Maybe they are telling the truth but the press jump on them and ruin their chances of a fair trial.

I feel sorry for any genuine victims cos people will just presume they're making it up. Maybe the footballers knew that and did rape them knowing they'd more than likely get away with it.

Of course not. No money in the world would take away the mental scars of being raped.

I've had the unfortunate luck of knowing 2 girls who have been raped, and in my experience of this I know that what they go through afterwards is not along the lines of "I want to tell a newspaper!!"

Fair dos if your mam works with rape victims Joe (does she really come home and tell you all about her work??) and so maybe people do react differently, but I can imagine it would be the vast vast minority of people who think about telling a newspaper.

The fact that we had to make sure my sister (who was one of the people I know who has been raped  ) didn't see the Evening Chronicle one day because it had the photo of the accused rapist in it means that these victims I'M SURE do not want to be writing newspaper stories. It was hard enough for her to go to court to read a statement :(

i can understand them making some money after the trial, whether they get a conviction or not.... but in the cases where they're making money & getting publicity b4 it's gone to trial...they'll b aware that trial by media means that u don't get a fair trial in court...whether u've experienced it or not lasses have read about rape victims stories in womens mags (i bet it's a small minority that haven't) it is well read in papers too how hard it is to get a conviction & by making a public show of it, it's only going to make it harder....

    That was my point.

There probably are women who wouldnt be too bothered about going to the press to get revenge on the person who did it to them but I THINK the majority of rape victims wouldn't do it :D

LOL here are my mams credentials: she lectures on counselling at various universitys and is employed full time by durham, she also does voulentry work for various organisations including women support groups.... And just as I'm sure u discuss your fathers job with ur father.. I discuss my mothers work wqith my mother :D

Rape vcitims and family members in murder cases are forever selling their stories - are you dismissing all of these as fake?!?!?!?

The way people handle trauma like this is unique to every person.. Many people will have the capacity to sell there story for money - just as many will have the capacity to talk about it...

or on the flipside of the coin, they may feel having a nation backing them after the trial by media... it may strengthen their case...

You can't say she's lying because she sold her story that's so foolish.

I am all for victims making cash. It is people like Mary Bell making cash that is wrong.

I wasn't saying that no victims of rape would be prepared to sell their story. I was saying that most probably wouldn't want to sell their story. None of us are saying that nobody would sell their story so we're disagreeing about nothing really aren't we

I couldn't agree more, although I feel Mary Bell should be able to put her story across (she was only a child) - I don't think she oculd be able to profit from this.

I didn't realise she had sold her story.

    TYNESIDE WAS OUTRAGED!!!

Home Secretary David Blunkett is facing a call for measures to stop killers like Mary Bell making money from their crimes.

There was outrage when double child killer Bell received £50,000 from the controversial book Cries Unheard, written by Gitta Sereny about the case.

June Richardson, mother of Bell's four-year-old victim Martin Brown, has been campaigning to stop criminals profiting from their crimes.

think that is wrong, I think we should learn from mary bell though - kids aren't born killers...her story should be heard - but it is so wrong that she makes money form this.
