The same applies when you're learning a second/additional language. The words in that order should be correct, but often they aren't, and someone needs to teach you this.

Yeah we do all have to learn the language, but you would know when a sentence was wrong instinctively, without having to learn about syntax

It is a learned instinct, picked up from those around you.

so you need to learn the vocab first? then when you've picked up all the words you need (bearing in mind you've never heard them before), you instinctively know in which order these words should be placed to create a sentence? I really can't understand you thinking.

instinct isn't learned or taught though.

If i were saying that then i would also be saying that anyone with an accent different to my own, or someone who uses different colloquialisms to me were stupid.
The first thing my syntax lecturer said to the class was that language and an understanding of language is instinctive - thats how we know when something is wrong. I happen to agree with him.
Granted, it may take a few years to actually grasp the language but you dont have to be taught every little thing about sentence structure before you can construct a basic sentence and know that it is right, similarly you can look at a basic non-sentence and appreciate that it is wrong.
