It's accurate in that it provides a scale against which everyone can be measured, thus enabling comparison.

I think that is a fair point.....so if u have good exam results surely that shows u have both knowledge and intelligence: knowledge to answer the questions with facts and intelligence to answer them in a coherent manner.

And i think the IQ test is arse

not having any knowledge just means you havent been taught things to know about. it does not mean you are not intelligent.
  4. Guest

not really, it doesn't take intelligence to answer coherently. We learn language then retain it's 'rules' as knowledge, so when you're answering a question, you use the facts that you know and write them in the manner you know

why do you think the iq test is arse?

sometimes the manner you know isnt grammatically acceptable though, and it is likely that - if you are more intelligent, you will be able to construct sentences better and make better word choices, although i suppose some of this comes from 'knowledge', much of it comes from common sense ( 'intelligence'?)

I think i have to go back on saying the iq test is arse cos i dont really know enough about it.:)

hehe... i think some1 didn't do well when they took an IQ test! ;)

exams/results measure the intellegent application of knowledge...

IQ tests measure the general intelligence without the need for specialist knowledge...

    apparently intelligence is:

    Intelligence Pronunciation: in-'te-l&-j&n(t)s Function: noun

Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin intelligentia, from intelligent-, intelligens intelligent Date: 14th century

1 a (1) : the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : REASON; also : the skilled use of reason (2) : the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests) b Christian Science : the basic eternal quality of divine Mind c : mental acuteness : SHREWDNESS

    2 a : an intelligent entity; b : intelligent minds or mind

3 : the act of understanding : COMPREHENSION

4 a : INFORMATION, NEWS b : information concerning an enemy or possible enemy or an area; also : an agency engaged in obtaining such information

    ;) :D

you can have no knowledge yet be intelligent.
an IQ tests the way your brain works, and assess' an individual's intelligence.
a pub quiz tests your knowledge.

Im reasonably bright when it comes to exams but still manage to walk into things and attempt to put frozen bottles of pop in the oven 2 defrost them.
I think this is an argument we couldnt ever win really:)

yeah, a pub quiz assessess (sp?) pure knowledge but surely an exam considers more thanthat as you get graded on your written style as well as whether you answer questions correctly.

    ok in summary then..

    - you are intelligent.
    - you possess some knowledge.
    - you have little or no common sense.
    - you are naturally clumsy / or may suffer from a yet to be diagnosed mild form of dyspraxia.

is that a fair appraisal of your skills? ;)

dyspraxia is the physical equivalent of dyslexia, it affects the motor movements in your muscles.

i.e. you look and see a drink, you move your hand to pick it up however you miss slighly and knock it over.

    basically clinically diagnosed clumsiness.

what do you mean by that?
if you dont answer questions correctly you dont pass.
  17. Guest

yes but your written style doesn't come from intelligence, it comes from your knowledge of spelling, grammar, vocabulary and general use of language.

but if you were asked to write an essay discussing something and you just put yes or no, you wouldnt do very well would you. In any question , you get marks for SPAG - so it must be important.

use of language is surely related to intelligence: much knowledge of sentence structure is simply becasue you KNOW something is wrong, you dont have to be taught, you just know

if that is the case you are not doing yourself any favours. your grammar is horrendous at the best of times.

look on the bright side though, you always have your common sense to fall back upon!

    ;)
