Isn't the answer 3? If not, why would you have the 3 apples in the first place?

And I'm sure the answer to this is 1. There is only one animal in each species.

I may be wrong but i think the answer is in the question. "you take 2 apples from 3 apples"

so you take 2 therefore you have 2

There was at least one more child born, hence they were triplets etc
