    One thing I was told about the way these beheadings are performed...

    The religion of the executioners states that having one's head cut off with a sword is a form of punishment. The hostages have done nothing wrong, and are just used to prove a point, so out of respect for their victims, they use a knife, which I think has some form of religious relevance.
