Would it not make sense to ring AOL and tell them that you have cancelled their services but the direct debit is still active and that you want your money re-transferred rather than going through the hassle of reporting a card stolen and losing a load of payments.
And if you've already told AOL/your bank that you've cancelled take em to court n sue the bollox off em , tis illegal to keep taking money off you if its all ready been cancelled. And if you havent already done this then WHAT THE FOOK YOU WAITING FOR???
If they want you to cancel on the 18th then they are probably going to try and take another month lying on from you aswell, hence not cancelling straight away. It's illegal and BT tried to do it with us. Get onto trading standards and have a read of this. http://ukcomplaint.tripod.com/btopen.htm
You should ALWAYS ask for written confirmation, or e-mail at least....then you have something to hold up when they say they have no record. I blame the pressurised sales grunts who probably get bollocked for "losing" customers and just don't bother cancelling it, pretty sure that will have at least something to do with it. I was on BT dial up, as soon as I rang, they cancelled and refunded the over payment immediately. I was upgrading to BT Broadband though....
