You dont HAVE to get a mac BTW.

I run Traktor from a partitioned hard drive on my laptop. The only thing installed on the 'DJ' partition is Traktor. Thankfully it has been solid as a rock ever since.

I boot into the other partition for day to day stuff where i don't care about new programs and day to day activities making it unstable.

I've got exactly the same setup on mine. XP Pro for my music stuff, Win7 for mucking about on, and debian, because I'm a linux geek ;)

Im after an upgrade on my iBook g4 too. Been looking at a few on ebay and if you look at the right time you can pick up a 2nd hand Macbook (the white one, not the Pro) for about £350

yea i've had a brief look around forums today to see what people recommend. it seems most people agree that using a mac eliminates any issues, mainly latency problems by the sounds of it. a few stories go on about having to stop using certain features of the midi controller as it causes crackling etc

it's good to know that people have got it running on a partition and have no problems like  the forums definitely seem to scare you off using a 'regular' notebook/laptop

this bein the case, what sort of spec laptop should i be looking for? i'd be looking to use the full features of scratch pro (if there's a new release) or possibly one of the new pioneer ddj-t1's if not. i wouldn't use it for anything else to be honest, purely for music

The problem is that a lot of mac users tend to like to shout it from the rooftops, and had shit dell, hp etc etc laptops.

Certain brands of laptop are absolutely fine for Traktor. It's just about buying a quality laptop. A quality laptop with an i7 processor, for the same price as an old core 2 duo macbook is going to offer far better performance value... macbook conformists..

it's a total minefield when you don't really know what you're looking for. for some reason a few forums have advised to stay clear of the i3/i5/i7 processors, no idea why

I don't understand why they'd advise you to do so, especially when the same family of processors power the mac in the first place.

I've got a Core2Duo with 2GB of ram (HP 6910p) and I've never had any problems running ableton or traktor.

well, i'm glad there's some reassurance here. ideally i didn't want to spend over £1300 for a laptop, traktor scratch pro and a midi controller, which looks easy enough with a decent spec laptop (£500 traktor, £200 controller, £700 laptop)

if there's a new traktor scratch pro release and it's an absolute fortune i might go for the pioneer ddj-t1 traktor bundle, whichever option works out cheaper, but then i'd probably have to overspend either way to get a decent laptop since that pioneer setup is gna be around £900

lol well it's funny you say that actually, i'm guessin it's gna be a big fat no and pioneer/traktor have it covered so you can't, but could you use the traktor software that comes bundled with the ddj-t1 with another midi controller, so you could use your ddj-t1 at home and then if it's not practical use the software with another midi controller when you play out?

this is probably a stupid question, i'm new to all this software and midi control carry on [IMG]
