    Turdmania Urgent Help Needed

I think my computer has completely died.

    Drive started clicking

I thought that doesn't sound good, so looked it up on google, saw on many sites it spells disaster - backup immediately.

Backed up the docs, but all pictures, music and video had to stay on the comp as my lil 256mb USB couldnt hack it all.

tried to run a checkdsk on the strength of some advice offered in a PC help forum, so restarted the computer.

Came back to a black screen, the pooter being unable to find the damn boot.

Thought shoving the Xp CD in for a last ditch attempt may work..........er no.

    More clicking.

Think i should freeze the fucker???

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH:cry:

Please help, lucy (on her laptop)

if your hard drive is clicking its defo fucked, putting it in the freezer is known as a way of giving you enough time to get the data off before it totally fucks, but i've never tried it so wouldn't advise it.

no the cd rw drive doesnt write cd's anymore, it hasnt for a while - something about the calibration of some laser shit.

    :( any suggestions?

Does the clicking noise mean I cant read from the CD drive to boot because of the little thingys not being able to find thier way about?

If this is the case If I could swap drives to the F:\ drive, make sure it is then called the C:\ drive, then install a fresh copy of windows onto that??

Like is it the C drive thats fucked, and the F drive should be ok?

Or do the little reader thingies go to both drives?

    oh bugger.

From what I have been reading, the drive will no longer work unless I freeze it for a day, then get about 40mins working time out of it, coz the little reader thingies will have contracted, allowing them to find their way better - therefore get important data off (somehow).

found it, its underneath the floppy drive.

Ok, I have removed the long thin grey wires, they came out easily, I assume this is the information wire

I need to remove the yellow black black red one too do i? Is this the power?

the clicking noise will be your hard disk dying. it's terminal.

it's probably the C: Drive where XP is installed. in this situation, what i would do is either 1) replace the knackered hard drive, re-install XP onto the new hard disk. 2) set your 40gb as your new master - install XP onto that. messing with the 40gb is ropey as u don't really wanna lose anything off that.

either way, stop using it for now so in the future u can possibly rescue any important stuff off the C: drive.

is any of that any help?

yep - grey cable is the IDE wire - the data cable. - the other is the power. you'll probably find now it won't boot at all - it'll try boot to either the CD or to the 2nd hard disk.

But, I want to call this drive C:\ otherwise it wont be too happy yeah?

Do i have to swap the IDE wire over though, so it becomes the primary thingy?

The Xp CD i want to install was already in.

When I turn the pooter on, I want to wipe F, clean install xp onto it.

My connection on that wire seems to be C:\ drive 13.6GB, E:\ drive - cd rw, D:\ drive, cd, then F:\ drive 40GB.

Dont i want my proper drive at the end of the cable??

in hindsight, why did i just not copy all the stuff the F:\ drive, then do a repair install, rather than a clean one :(

Oh well. hindsight is a wonderful thing!!

yeah, thats it's. it's fairly easy, the only tricky thing is the 'jumper settings' the main drive will be your MASTER (oo-er) so this should be the 40gb.

no - that 13gb sounds totally knackered. i'd get rid of it. re-format wouldn't solve the hardware problems.

The 40GB drive is screwed in, so I cant see the jumper settings, I can see them on the 13.6GB drive (which isnt helpful is it, everyones is different)?

Will i have to unscrew it, find out what it is, move the little thingies, then put it back

OH MY GOD I wish I hadnt started lol

It cant be worse than it is thought.

Can i just leave it unlplugged the 13.6GB one? is that safe?

yeah, I know, I meant when the computer was on instead of moving shit from C:\ to my USB thing, why didnt I shift it over to the F:\ drive, as that already had a copy of windows on (for some reason) then I could repair install on the F:\ drive
