The best cars for a student?

Following on from my thread about student accommodation, I'm gonna need to get a car that is reliable and doesn't cost a bomb to run/maintain. I've never had a car before so I don't have a clue tbh. I have about £2000 in savings that could well go towards a car + insurance (I'm 23). I want something that looks nice too :p

Golf's any good? Always liked them.

Suggestions here please :) I'd prefer to have something that I could keep and be happy with as opposed to picking up a £200 lump that is gonna need sweet talking every morning ;)

can't help with the car as i have only ever had one (would have thought small engine for tax and petrol costs), but Tesco is class for young peoples insurance

i passed my test when i was 18 but only got my "own" insurance this year (aged 22) meaning i had 0 years no claims, and tesco quoted me £605 for the year on my 1.1 litre micra. (that was with my Mams tesco clubcard) it was much cheaper than all the ones on confused and compare the market.

Read a few things on the internet (I think they were for America though) and people seemed to recommend honda civics or accords.

Get a ford focus, 2000 pate with around 80k miles can be had for about a grand, not too bad to drive either and cheap as chips to fix.

for 400 quid you could get a good bike for getting around town, alot quicker and easyer than a car....no costs, alot less hassle !

if you need to get anywhere out of town...hire a horse and cart or the train

    cheers

I need a car so that I can drive to and from Newcastle whenever I have some free time and want to see my m8's/family. Horses cost a lot more than a car!
