Recent Books / DVD's youve read/seen and recommend.

Another round of these .... Anyone bought any good dvd's or books recently they can recommend?

    For me...

    BOOKS :

"Jodie Picoult - The Pact". Quite a 'girlie' book but i really quite enjoyed this. About a young couple who grow up together, pushed together by their parents ... Until one of them commits suicide.

"Khaled Houssein - The Kite Runner". Story about a boy who grows up in Afganistan with his father, and their servant and his son. Got lots of stuff about Muslim traditions, and attitudes to the soviets and the taliban. Definately one that makes you think about attitudes to people in the middle east. Highly recommended!

    FILMS:

Just bought Escape from New York, special edition yesterday. Absolute total classic film.

Manchurian Candidate - Another brilliant film. Ignored this when it was doing the rounds at the flicks but its very well written and acted.

On a more arty stance - I've got 'Sideways' to watch next, which is about 2 blokes going around california's wine region. It got awards for best screenplay adaption and everyone who's seen it says its good stuff.

Anyone got any recommendations for books and movies?

I've just bought "The Traveller", by a mysterious author named John Twelve Hawks, which is supposed to be a very good thriller (haven't started it yet). The author of the book has kept his name a secret as it's part of the mystery surrounding the book itself - apparently the publishing company don't even know his real name and profits from sales are paid into a mystery company account???

    Just Bought ...

Primo Levi - If this is a man, the truce.

    ... About the Holocaust.

Had one of those hand written 'recommended' labels in waterstones, and some good write ups on the back. Should be interesting. :p

It's honestly been about a year since I last read a book that I thought was good.

They all seem to be either interminably dreary or written by some american who fancies a hollywood cheque, and basically publishes a film script.

I'll check some of these out though

I read (well, tried to understand) Universe in a Nutshell by Hawking when I was doing A level physics...

It's an awesome book, properly thought provoking and challenging. Really enjoyed it. Keep meaning to read a brief history of time.

picked up 'The Tent' by Margaret Atwood on saturday and nearly finished it by sunday. It is a collection of short stories all brilliantly penned, perfect travel reading.

and if like me if you missed Crash at the cinema, i implore you to watch the DVD, a simply stunning script tackling modern day racism.

Struggling to think of any worthwhile books to recommend, but then haven't read many that arn't related to my degree!! However, i know they're nothing new or particularly intellectual but....

....anything by Robert Harris (especially Fatherland) is well worth it for an easy, gripping read. Plus any books written by John Simpson (the BBC journalist) give a very interesting insight into life as a journalist in a war-zone and why we are fucking lucky to have the BBC as an (arguably) impartial news medium. Very few other country's have such a luxury with such a widespread network of reporters.

DVD wise cannot recommend Hotel Rwanda enough - managed to retain a great story whilst dealing with an issue (the Rwanda Genocide) that was shockingly under reported in the West.

American History X is a stimulating look at the race issue in the US, if rather 'Hollywood' in its style.

Finally, on a lighter note I recently re-watched Live Forever: The story of Britpop. and it was fucking hilarious. Even if you're not that keen on Oasis, Blur, Massive Attack, Pulp etc it's fantastic comedy. Liam and Noel in particular are superb and it's great to look back on the positivity of the mid-1990's.

I can't seem to get any further than a few chapters of a noddy book (for the little one) at the moment. I got loads of books for Christmas and have only read a couple which were not worth writing home about.

However i have just bought a lighter read .... The comic book 'V for Vendetta' by Alan Moore. The film is out soon too !!!!
Although i can't comment myself yet, they both come highly recommended ......

If anyone has seen the film "Rain Man" there's a good documentary on tonight about Kim Peek, the guy they based the film on. He's an autistic savant with an incredible ability to memorise anything and everything. Could be worth watching, or last least recording to watch at a later date...
