    North East Shitholes

    hola..

I need ideas for my Masters thesis..

Can anyone think of anywhere around Newcastle (other than Sunderland) that is a complete and utter shit pit in need of regeneration?

Run down degenerated centres, lacking social purpose & identity are the key requirements..

I was thinking about Washington, Whitley Bay or North Shields? Are they particuarly desolate in terms of the main streets, shops, housing and amenities?

I only need one site, and it must be a town/community centre - this is an indication of what I do, appropriate to the scale of the area of course...

Easington is a good example of a mining village slowly dying due to the closure of the pits........... it is isolated and has one of the highest crime figures of the region.

But Peterlee has a town centre that is almost a ghost town in terms of trade and is so run down has some of the cheapest property in the UK..................

It doesn't matter if it is a new town, infact its easier for me, I don't have to pussy about with planning policy..

Washington was one of the first that was suggested, Peterlee was also on the shortlist of two suggested by my tutor, but it lacks purpose - ie. is there any point in investing into an area that will bring limited return?

I'm looking for visually desolate place, but one that still serves an valid economic purpose, ie. Gateshead is a economic centre, but visually as far as towns go, it resembles AID's..

Aye I was going to say gateshead, other than that I would say the Meadowell/North Sheilds?

Its a bit of a strange one that like, because although there are some of the nicest looking houses in one street, they are complete states in other, boarded up, burnt out cars, houses - really scarey! Some places around there have been re-generated so much they look completely out of place its as if you are walking into Celebration (Disney Villiage). Mental.

Not sure about up there, but there's plenty places round this area you could choose- Easington being the natural choice. Places like Peterlee and Seaham.... Or Chilton and Ferryhill.

EDIT- no offence intended to anyone who lives in these areas, but they ARE shit.

Hebburn would be ideal. It's got a really old shopping centre, straight out of the seventies, and horrible housing just behind it.

    Bollocks

Although it doesn't have a funfair (that tbf was crap anyway) its by no means like North Shields as a place to live or work

I've lived there all my life and its looking better year by year, i lived in North Shields for the past year till 2 weeks ago and couldn't wait to see the back of it.

Whitley and its surrounding towns like tynemouth and cullercoats are great places to live

Tynemouth is ace, used to love going to the Gibraltar Rock for Sunday dinner there. I suppose I discounted North/South Shields because they've always been shit, whereas Whitley Bay had been ok, then went crap.
