    soz, dunno what that means:spangled:

maybe it's just cos I've only got 512Mb ram that's the problem.... be a lot cheaper to fix that than a new graphics card

ok, your graphics card will either be pci or agp. There are different slots on your motherboard (agp is better).

If your motherboard doesnt have agp you may want to think about upgrading the lot.

You can find out by looking at the motherboard, if the graphics card is in a different slot to any other adin cards it's prolly agp.

512mb of ram is enough unless you want to play the latest games with all the extra graphical whistles. I suspect your motherboard/processor might become the bottle neck anyway.

To recommend a good agp card, have a look at a radeon 9800 pro. Not state of the art but runs halflife2 etc smooth as you like.

Might be worth posting your full system specs so I/other geeks can work out your best upgrade route.

    :)

Instead of taking it apart, download Everest from here and install it.

It will be able to tell you exactly whats inside your PC without requiring any further effort :)

    ooo sorry!

Never been one to shell out hundreds on constanly upgrading graphics cards so not fully up to date with em.

Although saying that my 128mb GeForce 5200 is seriously struggling with games now.

I priced a new base unit and its gonna cost me £1300 or so.
Not at all wanting to shell that sort of cash out but i prefer PC games to consoles.
Have a chipped xbox with 380 games and all I really use it for is the odd game and watching tv shows and films on.

You canpick up a nvidia 6800ultra 2nd hand for about £130.

If you can afford to upgrade to PCI-Express mobo, you can get a 7800gt which is well fast for under £200

Re: Re: New graphic card needed, what to buy?

yeah looks like it. It's an 256mb nvidia GeForce FX 5700LE to be precise.

Plays HL2 and Doom3 great at 1024x768 on medium video settings, and not too shabby on high... Far Cry is killing my system though, have to run it on low to medium bling and drop the res :spangled:

I'm thinking I'm maybe just low on regular ram so will "borrow" another 512 from work and see if 1GB sorts it before I shell out bucks on a new graphics card

Advice still appreciated though as I might still treat myself... tis xmas after all

7800gt is not really in the same class as those other 2 - in fact it's way faster

    that x800 or x850xt are competitors for 6800gt / 6800ultra.

Only the X850XTPE is close and it's about £300

7800gt is more in line with x1800xl- it's a whole generation on. thing is 7800gt don't come in AGP and it's not gonna

If you want a reasonably priced card for agp, Nvidia have just released a 6800GS for about the £150 mark in AGP- it's lower spec than a 6800GT but clocked in a way that you get abou the same performance

It is possible to get a second hand.. fully working 6800GT or Ultra for £150..

Damn good cards too.. played HL2, FarCry, Doom 3 (& RE), F.E.A.R and Quake 4 on 1280 x 1024 at about 40 - 60 FPS at full detail.. with AA and AF..

    Wel worth it.. and I'm only running a 2800+ and 1GB DDR400..

Have a look on OCUK. They are available cheaper in the members market on their forums but you have to be a registered user with over 250 posts..

I have an GP 8x nVidia 6600gt, nothing amazing by todays standards, but it can still piss all over the consoles with Far Cry :D
