    Re: memory, processor etc.....HELP

I'm no good at P4s but I'm pretty sure that the earlier revisions of the chip (that ran the original 533 fsb) used Rambus.. I'm not sure though.

How much would you be willing to throw into your machine money wise? It might be better to get a new socket and chip.

Iirc the best chip you could get p4 (533 fsb wise) was a 3.06Ghz chip.. I think it was socket 478.. so yours may be the same socket as that.
They have now moved over to the LGA775 socket..

If you give me a rough budget I could draw up a simple system spec for ya if ya want..

so i guess already being on a P4 chipset, i cant move over to and AMd, athlon r sempron? fook no's how much i'd be willing to spend, looking to have gig of memory n a fairly decent processor, aslong as it is higher than 2.4gHz.

i bought an LG super multi dvd+-rw/cd+-rw dual layer drive, without knowing it required at leats 512 of ram and 2.4 gHz

    Oops..

Been there and done that.. first machine I got I was absolutely certain that a CD-ROM could write a CD-R.. tried for bloody weeks in vain  :dunce: (I was 11..)

I'll draw up a simple spec for ya and try and keep it to a minumum for ya to give ya an idea.
What ya gonna use the machine for?

    Try -

    Right clicking on desktop..
    Go to properties..
    Go to Settings..
    Press Advanced button..

Then there should be a tab saying Geforce [insert Model number] (probably top right tab)

In the default window it brings up if it lists AGP 4x or 8x then its a AGP card..

Reason I'm asking is that some mini atx boards don't come with AGP and only PCI.
Therefore if I recommend you get a certain motherboard and it has a AGP slot and you have a PCI graphics cad then you'll have to splash more £.

Doesn't reallt tell ya much cos mines an AGP card and it runs on PCI bus 3!

Only way to tell for sure would be to open your machine or to check the documentation that came with it.

Don't suppose you know what motherboard you've got do ya?? Sorry for drawing this out.. just wanna make sure you get the right gear..

The GeForce MX series are a bunch of budget cards that don't usually have the full processing power of the normal ones. Lots of them tend to be built in, I'm using a Shuttle PC here that has a GeForce 4 MX integrated into the motherboard, but I've turned it off and fitted a Radeon 9600 Pro.

You need to check round the back of your machine and see if your graphics card is built into the motherboard or not; if it is then the monitor socket will be level with all of the other sockets up the back of your PC. If it isn't, then it will be on it's own slightly further down the case off the main panel.

In addition you might want to download Everest Home from here , this will give you more information on your PC and allow you to post it on here. That way uber-hardware-geek chandler_90 can advise you on the best hardware upgrades ;)

Everest is a utility that allows you to work out whats inside your computer and how it performs when compared to other PCs.

It can tell you lots of detail about your CPU, Motherboard, RAM, all of which are handy in deciding what you need to upgrade and what you need to keep.

Chandler_90 - there's no need to go torrent hunting, everest home is free ;) :D
