    Laptops

Buying a new laptop this week. Got about £800 to spend but wouldn't mind getting some change.

It's mainly going to be used for work (excell, word, outlook etc etc), surfing the web, downloading music and watching porn.

Any advice on the best for value for money would be appreciated.

    Muchas gracias.

don't spend more than £500 tops.

Dont buy any of the other shite they offer you.

Sony's are expensive for no other reason than they're sony. avoid.

toshiba are good, not too difficult to fix/upgrade but a bit ugly.

HP same as tosh. Acer are a good budget brand.

Don't think cause it's 64bit it's better - it's not. most stuff won't utilise it as it's not written for 64bit processors. main advantage for going 64bit is more memory so applies better to desktop machines.

Make sure it's got atleast 2GB Ram - other than that, go to currys/comet/PC world and try them - find out what keyboard size you like best, screen size, etc.

    Cheers for that.

What would you recommend in terms of security software? I use Norton 360 at the minute.

You can get free software to do the same job as purchased. You can even get purchased software for free - if you know where to look.

Personally, Avira Anti Virus has 1 of the best detection rates, low memory foot print and it's free. It has a nag screen but there's a hack to get rid of that. As for firewall, i don't bother. my router does the job for me. Norton 360 is bloated, uses far too much system resources and takes over - it's for people who know nothing about computers. far too strict. and pricey. scrap it.

My knowledge of computers is limited to be fair. But I have noticed that Norton stops me from doing some things, like downloading from certain places.

I'll have a butchers at Avira. Cheers again.

i love my dell, it wasnt 'that' expensive, but the best thing about it is the fact that if it breaks a nice technician will come round the next day and fix it for me :)

they've only been out once in 2 years - and that's only because i dropped it

^^ I'm very happy with my Dell PC too.. best I've ever had although I don't know how much that transfers over to their laptops in general.

As for 'laptop', I have a Asus EEE PC 1005HA netbook and it's perfect for doing my uni work, watching porn, watching films, listening to music and using the internet. The only reason I'd ever decide to buy a laptop in the future is if I needed to use is for graphics/video production, gaming or other types of software that typically demand power. I notice absolutely no difference in performance with this than I do on any of my mates laptops of even my quad core PC as far as the tasks that I mentioned. Installation of programs is slower, but not 'slow'. It's just that my PC is really fast. Anything else is pretty much the same..

Oh, and the battery typically lasts around 8 hours with one charge and thats with use of wireless internet/browsing/music etc... I paid £300 for mine but the cost should be £250 or under now I guess.

Im going to break presumptions and not tell you to get a Mac. Going off what you say it'll be used for, id say just get a mid-range acer.

 ive got an Acer and I love it, I use it for basically the same stuff and it does the job perfectly

As for security software I wouldn't pay for it, over priced and don't do anything the free ones do in my experience, AVG Free Edition and PC Tools free firewall have never let me down yet *touch wood* also have spybot and ad-aware free which seem to work

    Mac. All day long.
My 1st Macbook is about 4 years old now and it's literally been the most rock solid piece of electronic equipment I have ever bought. Never crashed, never picked up any nasties along the way and runs like a dream with Logic, Ableton, Maschine, Traktor and a hefty old music collection on it to boot. It's been lugged up and down the Country weekend in, weekend out, im yet to see it fail me.

If you have the money, you'll never look back. I have to use PC's at work at they just seem so far behind Mac in regards to functionality, layouts & general user friendliness. You'll not need to start looking at another Laptop for at least 5 years with a Macbook, I found myself reformatting/wiping/replacing (in some cases) your standard £250 Laptops every 12 months before hand.

The reason i didnt recommend a mac is because hes not going to be doing all the things you are proudy! he only wants it for a few emails and wanking lol

Yeah DO NOT get a Mac. Goes without saying really because they're not cheap and not aimed towards people who only need to do a few simple things. I'm still sticking with my recommendation of a Netbook.. a lot of them are shite, but there's a handful of decent ones by specific manufacturers that are totally solid and there's nowt better than getting 8 or 9 hours of use with one charge.. and there's nothing more portable really.

well it could be argued that most smartphones do that. although having a hamshank over porn on your phone would be a bit extreme. saying that....

    unless your names gary proud.....

    and its an iphone ;)
