Can I walk out of my job?

Well, not so much walk out, just not show up again. I've been there 6 weeks, I can't stand it and it's not getting any better. I never signed a contract, so theoretically can I do this?

Yes you can - the worst thing that will happen is they might not pay you for any days worked since your last pay?? Not good before xmas...:fart:

Well, my old boss previous to this current job told me he'd have me back if it went pear shaped. I got in touch, he said he'd have to have a word with his Dad, then he would get back to me Friday gone. I never heard from him, so i sent an email off before. Fingers crossed i guess.

Regardless of whether you can afford to walk out pay-wise, do you not need a reference from them? How else would you explain a 6week gap in your cv to a prospective new employer?

Not necessarily. From what i've read, Referees can be previous employers or professional bodies that know you well, they don't have to be your last two employers.

Technically they can be anybody who's ever dealt with or knows you. But it looks a bit suss if you can't get a reference from your last job.

Why not just hand in a letter of resignation?

Theoretically as you have no contract you don't have to work notice.

Therefore you do everything above board and they don't have a leg to stand on..

Don't make it a " I quit, your business is shit and I hate your fucking guts" type resignation though.
Say something like " due to circumstances in your personal life it is no longer possible for you to work in your current profession/position". If asked why just say that your uncomfortable dicussing it.

I know it sounds shit but if your your next employer requires to speak to your last employer regarding your leaving of the job then he can't slag you off.. :D

I've got no qualms with the place/management, it's what i'm doing I'm sick of. Valid points you're making though which I have taken on board, cheers!

I don't think you have to give a reason for leaving.

When I handed in my resignation at safeway I just told them I had decided to leave, and would be leaving as soon as i had worked my one weeks notice.

Oh, and I went on the dole after I left Safeway. The dole people said that they would have to investigate whether I should receive it because I had willingly left my job. However, by the time they had got round to investigating it, I had got another job! And I didnt have to pay back the benefit money I had received

You can quit and still get dole.
Just tell the rock n roll you were getting bullied or something and you were really stressed out.
