I can remember when I was working for the consett internet cafe 3 years ago and the council were trying to charge us £6k a year for a 2Mbit leased line

How things have changed - I'm on 1mbit for just over £20 a month :D

A Least line isa different kettle of fish tho, you have a dedication syncronous line direct ontot the backbone of the internet, On ADSL or cable you share the line and you have slower upload speeds, you cant run a internet cafe on ADSL or Cable cos your uplaod speed will not be up to it, you would need a dedicated pi[pe and would be paying 2 to 10k a year depending on speed

It was the same line the council were hooked up to, they were wanting to resell it to us, we were on a 256k kilostream line anyway so ADSL would have been an improvement (at least at download speeds).

Back then ADSL was still being trialled and wasn't available to the general public.

Running an internet cafe (at least a 16 machine one) on 256K is quite feasible, the local secondary school at Lanchester down the road had a network of 60 PCs hooked up to 2 multilink ISDNs and it worked ok...

I would not goto an internet cafe that was slower then my home setup so i would expect it to have 256up and down per PC so ADSL would not work cos upload speeds would be terrible even if you had 10M down and say 10 pc thats 1MB each down but only 34k up each

And you honestly think that the line was in use at full capacity the whole time?

People used to come in, check their mail, etc. The only time we ever used the line properly was to update machines at night. During the day there was virtually no traffic (downloading webpages hardly cuts into the bandwidth much).

You'd be lucky if you saw anything over 40% use, especially as 10 of those machines were public use and the other 6 were office PCs upstairs.

All im saying is if you share 10+ PCS on an ADSL line your asking for trouble, Leased lines exist for a reason and that reason is they whoop and ADSL or Broadband in both direction (and go up to 155MBps)

    Read my post again.

We were using 256K Kilostream (leased line) not adsl.

Even the lowest down-band ADSL connection (which was 512k down, 256k up) pisses all over that and costs markedly less.

Hell, for the money the council wanted to charge we could have probably bonded 4 ADSL lines together and had significantly better results.
