If, for example, I was after an ipod touch, and my girlfriend had an iphone, if her iphone was 'lost' and then blocked when a replacement was sent out, would it still be usable as an ipod touch or would it be completely knackered. Just on the off chance that it somehow turned up in my pocket at a later date

Nah mate it'll still fully function with iTunes etc but you'll only be able to join wifi networks. You'll not get any 3G or anything though.
