£3000 top up fee's for students each year

Another nail in the country's coffin:

Back in 1997 on the tail end of the conservative government when i started uni... we got.

    1. Free education.
    2. Means based grant
    3. Optional Student loan.

    Now in 2003 we have:

    1. Paid education for people who can afford it.
    2. No grant at all.
    3. (Compulsary) Student loans a necessity.
    4. £3000 top up fee on top of every year you are in university education???

Labour is actively trying to put this through parliament at the moment, which was on the news this morning.

Now its been 3-4 years since i finished my degree so why should i care... but seriously - this is horrific!!! Labour were supposed to be making it so EVERYONE could have a crack at higher education - i fail to see how they have achieved or improved upon the system the tories left here.

    Whats everyones thoughts?

THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS IN DEBT!!!!!!!!!

Newcastle's bars & clubs are rammed to the rafters on a Monday with students, when they are not I will know students have financial problems.

    Until then......

doh :dunce: that's the point numpty, back then about 20% school leavers went to Uni, so it was affordable to massively subsidise it with grant and no top-up fees. Now Labour wants it so around 50% of school leavers can go to Uni but the cost is massive and has to be paid somehow.

If you want to make a point tory boy, stop whining like a bitch and tell us how you'd pay for it??

Your spot on, debt collection agencies are the biggest growing industry in the UK yet everyone is spending and socialising more than ever.

    numpty? im hurt.

First off, not everyone should be going to university in the first place, ive said before we have a nationwide obsession with sending everyone to university which has so far seen the value of an actual degree plummet, while we have a national shortage of skilled tradespeople.

I would pay for educating our citizens by not interfering in international affairs and pumping BILLIONS of pounds into going to war in iraq to appease the united states.... there'd be enough to pay for that, and a bit left over to send you to charm school and teach you some manners dingleberry :D

    :D

its only money at the end of the day. We'll all gonna end up working for the bank manager at some stage of our lives. Some of us just choose to get a headstart.

    Me for example.

    2 OVERDRAFTS

2 grand in debt, already.

lol @ dingleberry, that's the best insult I've heard on here for a while :king:

you make a fair point... I'm sure we don't need 50% of our workforce with a degree, but if only 20% or so get to go to Uni it has to be open to all based on ability

Sending more people to University just means that degrees are worth less, pretty much the same as letting increasing percentages of people get better grades at GCSE and A Level. Those who really want to prove themselves academically now need a Masters or some other post-grad qualification, usually resulting in even more debt!

Cut down the numbers of people going into higher education and bring back grants.

Somebody has to pay for students to get all those desmonds. Why should it be people who didn't go to uni and never wanted to (that is most of the people in this country).

Why should I pay (through the taxes I've been paying since I was 17) for a student to have a doss for three years?

I think people should have to pay for any post A level education in full, it might stop people doing pointless degrees that don't improve their job prospects one jot.

Well i'd rather pay for our own youth to be half educated - than pay for our military to bomb innocent countries whose oil we want :spangled:

i think 3 grands well steep, the countrys gonna end up in more and more debt!
lee(promise)- i get what ya saying hun, abot why we as a nation have to pay for students to 'doss', but to be fair, sum degrees, like mine for example, i wudnt say are pointless, its gonna help our/ur future children.
what wont be fair, in the future, is if, someones got the intellegence to go to uni, but cant afford it!
my parents paid for my tutuion fees, im lucky.
    bring back the grants!!! xx:p
