usually if you go just a little overdrawn and complain they won't apply any charges.

First Direct tried to do it with me when I went a couple of quid over because a subscription for my bank account plus thingy came out.

They were going to apply two charges of £25 but I rang them up and threatened to report them to the Financial Obudsman and close the account so they relented.

    Worth a try.

I've gone over a few times before and as a result recieved a letter telling me that i'd been charged a £25 commission fee or something but since my account had been in good shape for a long time they'd wave the fees. This time i wasnt so lucky. I was -£8.30 over..

Reckon it's still worth a shot? What would I say.. I can see me saying 'Righ I've just been charged £25 and i didnt know so i'd like to close my accoutn because i'm moving to a different bank.' Than a reply of 'ok your account has been cancelled, thanks.'

I'm not good at getting out of things like this tbh

I reckon they have some sort of scoring system to decide whether they can do it or not.

Can anyone who works in a bank confirm this?

Ps my account was like a pocket money account so wasn't too arsed about closing it down but glad my bluff wasn't called.

The financial ombudsman are currently looking into the outrageous charges that banks are imposing on their customers and are clamping down on it big time when its something rather trivial like this. So phone the bank and complain and say if they dont refund the charge then u will be speaking to the ombudsman to report the bank for unfair practices, or email them and cc the email to the ombudsman, that would have them shitting their pants ;)

My friend cashed two checks before 3 days b4 pay day last month at Northern rock (where she works) and was told that by the time they had cleared that she'd have been paid.

but checks cleared b4 that so she was charged bank charges of £90

£30 for each check and £30 for going over her limit.

Her own silly fault really but fucking hell that's loads of money:p

The girl at work does it all the time, we get paid by cheque every week so it takes a few days to clear but cos she's always on the edge of being iverdrawn when she has things coming out they alwyas come out without the cheque having truley cleared, even though she pays in a cheque every week, you'd think they'd know it wasn't gunna bounce

ive never been charged with barclays :p

when i worked at abbey first charge always gets refunded but any other incurred after that is at the advisors discretion, if u hav had a few back b4 is unlikely unless its a fault or someone else or if u kick off big style but in most cases they prob wont do it!!
